I understand there are cases in which you will not know. “We’re figuring things out right now,” a polite way to say, “Have some respect and don’t interfere.”Hygiene is a big deal in Medellín so if you want to compete with the Colombian guys and other foreigners, shower at least once a day, twice if you had to do something that caused you to sweat throughout the day. (Mercado del Rio in Poblado is a great example of this type of environment, filled with young professionals, students and couples.) See this article and this one for some additional suggestions.A friend of mine found out a woman he was seeing has a boyfriend when they got back from a lunch date and he was waiting for her at the salon where she works. You’ll probably find Medellín style to be more casual than major cities in other parts of the world, but many foreigners take it too far. Speaking to my friend Tim, he suggested that in his experience women were far less likely to approach men than back home in the UK, since gender roles are perhaps more pronounced in Latin American culture. My friends, however, will often report to the contrary, stating that in varying ways Colombian girls are very different to those back home.I’m reluctant to make any sweeping generalisations about the fairer sex in Colombia and put most of it down to the fact that people are very similar in most cultures, but as a foreigner you only peak into certain aspects of the culture and, moreover, tend to attribute aspects of the culture you experience to the culture in general, when it can easily just be one person’s tick.I have also not failed to notice the amount of international men (or gringos) who come here looking for attractive women and have read the numerous articles on how to date a paisa woman. With so much attention focused on the gorgeous (and yes I am a bit jealous) paisa women, I think it’s only fair to talk about the men, and after three months of living in Medellín complaining about the lack of good-looking men, something very strange has happened.
I am starting to see Colombian men in a completely different light.
Once the ‘pick-up’ is out the way and you’re on your way to relationship-dom, I’ve found Colombian girls to be very much like girls (and people) all around the world: It depends on the person.
